From Dairy Goats to Blackberry-Eating Pros

Like a lot of things around Feakin Homestead, our goat grazing service started a little unexpectedly.

I originally began raising dairy goats to provide fresh milk for our family and part of having dairy goats means breeding them. During my second year, I tried to breed three of my does…and not a single one took.

I was devastated.

And around here, we don’t really believe in having expensive livestock just hanging around looking cute. 😂 Everybody has to earn their keep!

So we put the goats to work.

We had plenty of blackberries, overgrown shrubbery, and steep hillsides that were a nightmare to weed-eat. Since I don’t allow chemical spraying on our property, we turned the goats loose to see what they could do.

Turns out… they were REALLY good at it.

They cleared areas we struggled to maintain, happily munched their way through problem vegetation, and did it all without chemicals or heavy machinery.

That’s when the idea hit me: If they can do this for us, why not let them help other property owners too?

Today, our herd has grown to more than 24 goats, and each one has a purpose on the homestead whether they’re providing milk, helping grow our herd, or heading out to tackle someone’s blackberry problem.

For grazing jobs, we bring the goats directly to your property along with portable electric net fencing and a solar-powered charger. We contain them in the designated area and let them get to work doing what goats do best...EAT! 🐐🌿
